Widespread protest, Residents Protest Brazil World Cup

Anti-government demonstrations in Brazil continues to expand. Residents also protested now the World Cup is considered to be a waste of money.


The protests initially triggered by the government's plan to raise bus fares. However, despite the ongoing demonstration that the plan had been canceled.

Riots occurred in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Residents protest against bus fare hike and the subway.

At least 55 people were injured in the riots. Police arrested approximately 40 people were involved in the riot.

Police seized Molotov cocktails, knives and illegal drugs from rioters who merke resistant. Sao Paulo State Government stated, handling the riots has been run according to the procedure.

"The police deal with riots professional," said Sao Paulo Governor Geraldo Alckmin, as quoted by the BBC, Friday (06/14/2013).

Aks protest hike in transport fares is not only happening in Sao Paulo. Massive demosntrasi also occurred in the city of Rio de Janeiro. However, the demonstration can take place peacefully.

Brazilian government reasoned, they raise rates to keep inflation rate. Bus fares in Brazil has never increased since 2011.

Divert protesters demanding the improvement of living conditions. They also criticized the World Cup project considered would improve the living conditions of the population of Brazil.

"A teacher is more valuable than Neymar," one banner said Brazilian soccer star, as quoted by the BBC, Thursday (06/20/2013).

Education and health facilities are not adequate in Brazil. The Government has always argued they did not have sufficient funds.

Brazilians feel cheated when the country was chosen to host the World Cup. They questioned where it came from funds to build new football stadiums.

"The people of Brazil are fed up with the existing system. We now demand a change, "said a protester named Camila Sena. (sbmptn)
